[Product] Lace-amatic - Instant Tightening & Knotting

사용자 삽입 이미지

if you get tired of lacing your shoes every time you go outside, then the lace-amatic is the perfect gadget
for you. this small two-part plastic mechanism acts as a ratchet to tighten up pre-tied shoes allowing
users to slip on their shoe and tighten it up without retying a bow every time.

the lace-amatic slips over the shoe's laces and once twisted, it tightens up the laces just like tying them up. while you may be thinking this is a rather useless invention for lazy people who don't want to tie their shoelaces, it was actually designed for older people and those with reduced mobility, for whom bending down to tie up their shoes is a difficult task.

[Design] Skate Hard in Destructos !

사용자 삽입 이미지

These shoes right here are called “Destructo Sports Action Shoes!” Oh my goodness. I know, and you know, that if you do a lot with your feet, your feet shells explode. And when I say feet shells I of course mean shoes. Your shoes are worthless! They come apart at the flick of a knife! But not anymore, now you’ve got these amazing piece-by-piece strong shoes, by Thomas Balaguer.

When you wear Destructo, you wear quality. Branded with the dreaded Nike scythe, these shoes are made to take some damage. Like “rubbers” of the past (your grandpa might have worn rubbers), these have replaceable covers. But where rubbers were used only for snow, Destructo shoes are used for action, sports, and action sports. Skateboarding, street hockey, biking, and yes, of course, parkour.

Interchangeability in the upper and lower parts.

Recessed shoelaces.

Foam padded collar.

Padded tongue (STI FLO2 Foam).

Tricot lining

Synthetic leather outer.

And the replaceable part, the Phylon soled, 400 NBS outsoled lower.

I’d love to get my hands on these to paint some pretty pictures. Really!

[Business] Nike's New Jordan Melo M6 Interactive Site

I love the multimedia journey that my colleagues and Nike/Jordan created for the launch of the M6 model. I like it because it has a rather fresh approach with video product storytelling divided in small but effective pills.

It's a walk through the inspiration, the design process and Carmelo Anthony's feedback to the product. Very insightful and very "intimate" and therefore pretty authentic.

The website remembered me that we often try to say too much about a product, either in text or in video or through interactivity. In this case a few words and a few great images say it all and deliver a great brand experience.

But there are also two other aspects to point out: first of all the seemless integration of product, athlete and commerce. On every page of the website you always find a direct link not only to Nikestore.com but also to wholesale online retailers, a fact that is quite unusual yet interesting

The other detail to look at is definitely more for visual geeks... look at the interface. Love the menu that, among the features, also offers the opportunity to change the overlay patter, the volume and the brightness (!!) of the video.

[Design] Mojito Shoe by Architect, Julian Hakes

사용자 삽입 이미지

London architect Julian Hakes has designed a pair of shoes with no foot plate.

Called Mojito, the design consists of a single piece that wraps around the wearer’s foot, forming support for the heel and ball.

The foot naturally forms a bridge between the two.

The product is made of carbon fibre, laminated with rubber on the side that touches the floor and leather on the side next to the skin.

Here’s some text from the designer:

One late summer night in the studio I was thinking about the design of shoes in general. I wondered why there was the need for a foot plate in shoes such as high heels. When I look at a foot print on sand it is very clear to see that the main force goes to the heel and ball. With a high heel providing the heel is supported, even by standing on a wooden block the foot naturally ’spans’ the gap naturally, with bones and tendons.

The foot has its own inbuilt strength and support so why duplicate this. You would not have a jumper with rigid arms between elbow and wrist. So this raised the question, if the design of a shoe was an evolution of the early sandal and how can new materials and design techniques provide new solution?

So I set to exploring this question in a similar way to how I would design a bridge, examining the forces and looking at the most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used. With this approach I then set about wrapping my foot in tracing paper, then binding it up in masking tape and then drawings various geometries onto and over the form of my foot. The next stage was rather dangerous as I had to cut the shape off my foot with a scalpel and not damage the pattern or my foot.

The design this produced is a single wrapped geometry which starts under the ball of the foot and then over the bridge, then sweeping down below the heel before then twisting back on itself to provide the support for the heel and ankle. This form felt light and airy on the foot. So we called it the ‘Mojito’ as it was rather like a twist of lime skin. The material choice is simple: The shoe is a laminate with Carbon fibre for the core which gives the shoe its spring and strength, leather on the foot side and rubber on the walking wearing side. 3 materials, each doing a specific job.

We are now in talks with specalist shoe fabricators in for the inital prototypes, a firm in Italy would be able to make the inner carbon fibre core and then I would love to get some fabulous furniture makers in High Wycombe to ’skin’ the shoe in leather as their stitching detailing is second to none.

[Design] No Shoelace But Better

사용자 삽입 이미지

Shoelace is always a disturbing thing in many different ways and No Shoelace but better is designed to overcome these common problems associated with shoelace. This new type of running shoe will allow the user not to have an excessively tight fit on the top of the foot.

Moreover, the user will not experience frequently untying the lace and coming loose, instead, this design concept completely wraps around the foot with a piece of material, which can be adjusted by wearer with the Velcro strap. The designer has opted to keep the design simple from the visor aspect, yet contains all the necessary functionalities as a running shoe.
