[Tech] "Living Goods” Barcode Mobile Application

사용자 삽입 이미지

How many miles did your lunch travel to get to your plate? Even if we eat organic and fresh, most of us don’t know the origin of our produce, meats and dairy, and we often fail to realize that our food probably spends more hours in transit than we do getting to work. One of 18 Greener Gadgets finalists, the AUG/Living Goods Program is a conceptual mobile phone app that scans product barcodes and then instantly gives the low-down on the producer, how far the food has come, if the product is in season, historical pricing, detailed consumer ratings and your own purchasing history.

The AUG/Living Goods Program aims to promote the localization of “live foods” via a barcode-accessible “Producers” directory. One of its primary goals is to show consumers their local impact every time they make a purchase. Connection is a snap, since consumers can receive all the pertinent info via a smart phone or even through SMS.

The benefits are clear: buying local food reduces our carbon footprint, ensures higher nutritional values, and re-infuses money back into the local economy. Moreover, for the farmer, partaking in the program allows them to market their farming methods (e.g. no pesticides, specialization in certain veggies, etc.) and develop stronger relationships with their distributors and most importantly their consumers.

Providing access to local farm information, the distance goods have traveled, nutritional values, and historic pricing also stands to empower the consumer, allowing them to make much more informed decisions about one of the most essential components of daily life

[Product] Domino Japan's Happy Valentine Pizza

사용자 삽입 이미지

Put down that bow & arrow, Cupid, and pick up a slice of Domino Pizza Japan's "Happy Valentine Pizza"! The limited time, special edition pizza announced by the Japanese branch of America's huge pizza conglomerate is sure to be a hit with guys tired of the usual chocolate gifts foisted upon them every year by the opposite sex.

Heart-shaped pizzas aren't a new phenomenon - Papa Johns sold them (see ad below) around Valentine's Day of 2009 - but the concept should go over better in Japan where women traditionally are the gift-givers on Valentine's Day while men return the favor one month later on White Day.

[Design] MIT's Food Printer : The Greenest Way To Cook?

사용자 삽입 이미지

Everyone is talking about local food, farmers markets and like, cooking? Who has time for that? And really, is Michael Pollan serious with his Rule #2- "Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food." Why bother even having an MIT if you are going to think that way?

Make shows us how Marcelo Coelho and Amit Zoran of the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT propose a much greener, more efficient, waste-free process: Print out your dinner.

Cornucopia is a concept design for a personal food factory that brings the versatility of the digital world to the realm of cooking. In essence, it is a three dimensional printer for food, which works by storing, precisely mixing, depositing and cooking layers of ingredients.

사용자 삽입 이미지

Cornucopia's cooking process starts with an array of food canisters, which refrigerate and store a user's favorite ingredients. These are piped into a mixer and extruder head that can accurately deposit elaborate combinations of food. While the deposition takes place, the food is heated or cooled by Cornucopia's chamber or the heating and cooling tubes located on the printing head.

Just imagine the impact this would have. Real food rots. It has peels. Half of it is wasted. The whole infrastructure of food stores with their refrigerated cases becomes unnecessary. And imagine, no more pesky farmers markets occupying valuable parking lots. This is truly green.
