When science fiction says it we can believe it… because it is sci-fi. Not true and not real, just imaginary and amusing in our brains. But when the learned lot like scientists tell you that immortality is just around the corner, then things like the hair on your neck standing and your skin crawling and all happens.

Scientist Ray Kurzweil has announced that humans could become immortal in 20 years through nanotechnology and an increased understanding of how the body works. He says this comes as ‘our understanding of genes and computer technology is accelerating at an incredible rate’. He calls this theory the ‘Law of Accelerating Returns’.

Since nanotechnology is what will make us live forever maybe that will be the next target for you-know-who. If you don’t know, then don’t bother. He also mentioned that in 25 years ‘we will be able to do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath, or go scuba-diving for four hours without oxygen’ and ‘heart-attack victims will calmly drive to the doctors for a minor operation as their blood bots keep them alive’.

We will be able to write books within minutes, virtual sex will become common place and like in Star Trek, holograms will become part of our lifestyles. He has depicted the future in a very gory manner – the final straw – ‘we can look forward to a world where humans become cyborgs, with artificial limbs and organs’. I am not going to sleep tonight.
